What's in a name
By Simon Ellwood
Feedback from people new to
Fairey Tails has indicated people are puzzled by the name and
paricularly the spelling of this publication.
Not wanting to confuse any
more would be souls, here is the history of Fairey Tails.
A long time ago in a far
away land called Tyne and Wear was a student. This student had a
Home computer called a BBC model B micro computer. The student
was of course me. This I used for typing up my college work and
playing games. Then a historic compuer program was released
called Page Maker (until Aldus sued the pants off the company and
they had to change the name). This was a Desktop publishing
program. I got this program for my computer and wondered what to
do with it. I then came up with an idea to publish a news letter
about myself. This was a good idea as it saved all the repetition
you get when you write letters to lots of people.
People seemed to like
recieving this publication which was called "Simon Says".
All was well with the world and periodically "Simon Says"
was published for many years. The BBC was replaced by various PCs.
In 1990 I met Mandy and
towards the end of 1990 we moved into a house in "Fairey"
Cresent. Early in 1991 we got two cats Purdey
and Blackie, both with "tails" such is the norm.
When it came to publication
time for "Simon Says", Mandy was keen to contribute but
how could she with a title like "Simon Says". We racked
our brains for a new name. We came up with "Fairey Tails",
the rest is history ....
Note that this web site is
now Fairey Tails, the paper version is being phased out. Fairey
Tails can be read all round the world.
